Difference Between AA Battery and AAA Battery

AA Battery vs AAA Battery

AA Battery and AAA Battery are the most common battery types used in households. Batteries are very common devices that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. They are indispensable as they provide power to many household appliances and gadgets. Batteries are classified according to current they supply. They differ in sizes, and different batteries have a name depending upon their size. Here we would differentiate between two of the common dry cell battery types, the AA and the AAA.

Both AA and AAA batteries are used in household gadgets like TV remotes, toys, cameras, wall clocks, telephones and many more items. Both actually carry the same amount of voltage but vary in the method used in delivering this voltage.

AA batteries are slightly longer and also have a more girth than AAA batteries. It is this difference in size that makes AA batteries delivers more power. Thus appliances that require more power are operated using AA batteries while smaller ones like toys and TV remotes use AAA batteries. Children’s toys consume more power which is why they run on AA type batteries. Even flashlights require more power and hence use AA batteries.

It is surprising but both AA and AAA batteries provide same voltage to appliances which is 1.5 volts. Voltage is nothing but electric potential of a body. It is the current supply that makes a difference between AA and AAA battery types. AA batteries are able to produce more current in comparison to AAA batteries. In AA batteries, different voltage versions are available. The big difference noticeable to a common man is length. Whereas AA batteries are taller at 50.5 mm, AAA batteries are thinner and also shorter at 44.5 mm.

Both AA and AAA batteries are available as primary batteries which means they are use and throw types, and as secondary or rechargeable batteries, which can be used after charging when their power goes down. There are chargers which can charge both AA and AAA batteries that are rechargeable.

Summary

• Both AA and AAA batteries are a source of power to appliances.

• They differ in size, with AA being taller and wider.

AA battery length: 50.5 mm, diameter: 10.5 mm

AAA battery length: 44.5 mm, diameter: 13.5 – 14.5 mm

• AA batteries also carry more material inside thus delivering more power.

AA Battery capacity: 2700mA-h (alkaline 15A battery ), 1100mA-h (carbon–zinc 15D battery )

AAA Battery capacity: 1200mA-h (alkaline 24A battery ), 540mA-h (carbon–zinc 24D battery )

• AAA batteries have a shorter span of life than AA batteries.
