Difference Between Alaskan Malamute and Alaskan Husky

Alaskan Malamute vs Alaskan Husky

The major difference between these dogs is that, one is a standard dog breed according to many kennel clubs, and the other is only a type of dog but not a breed. This article explores the characteristic of both dogs and presents a comparison for improved clarity.

Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan malamute is also known as Mal, and this is a standard dog breed with particular characteristics being defined by many respected kennel clubs in the world. They are mainly working dogs but very much popular as pets dogs. Malamutes have a very important history regarding their origin in Alaska, as they are descendants of the Alaskan sled dogs. Given their natural traits became a separate dog breed among most of other selectively bred breeds, malamutes are characterised with their natural size ranges by the kennel clubs. The usual upper limit of weight is 39 kilograms for a male and 34 kilograms for a female. Their height is 58 centimetres in females and 64 centimetres in males. Their coat is thick, and it contains a plush inner coat and long outer coat with slightly harsh outer coat. The colour of their coat could be any of sable, black, grey, red, or white. In addition, the whole coat appears as a combination with white colour always. Except for the blue colour, their almond shaped eyes could be light to dark brown according to the kennel club standards. Their tail is an important feature, as it should be carried over the back with a highly furred waving plume appearance. They are not much friendly with other small animals and sometimes with children, although they are affectionate pets.

Alaskan Husky

Alaskan husky is a type of dog especially reared for working purposes only. Since they do not fall under any breed, they can have many possible traits in appearance as long as they can pull the sleds. These dogs are bred to make the best working dog from either same or different parent dog breeds. That is the principal reason for them to lose respected characteristics of a breed. However, they are usually being moderately large and weigh about 21 – 25 kilograms. The overall features including the colour, size, and overall appearance vary greatly among the individuals of this dog type. Therefore, any kennel club does not register the Alaskan huskies as a standard dog breed, but they are only respected as a dog type. Their fur coat is not much thick but good enough to withstand the cold. A most important ability of these dogs is that they can pull sleds for few hours and long distances at over 30 kilometres per hour. Therefore, they make an excellent income for the owners when they are sold around US $ 10,000 – 15,000.
