Difference Between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo

Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo

Processors are very important part of computer architecture. Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are two different versions of computer processors. They belong to different generations of processors and are equally used today, for different reasons. Both are dual core processors, which mean a processor having two cores, and two cores helps in performing many tasks at a time. A common user cannot differentiate between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, as in general working they are not really different. Many well known companies have launched their processors in the market and a good variety is available for the users.

Core Duo

This is the first dual core processor, developed for laptops. It is based upon the Pentium M and is much more efficient than Pentium D is. In core duo, two processors are installed in series, and both work at the same time, sharing the load. Two cores are on same die, and both share a L2 2 MB cache. An arbiter bus controls cache and front-side-bus access. Core duo was the new tern in computer processing, providing two processors in one package, making computer action faster.

Core 2 Duo

This is the second generation of processors and is developed for laptops and desktops.  Majority of desktops are having Core 2 Duo these days, which has two processors cores on a single chip. This architecture of chip enhances its performance many times, and we can process data at much faster pace, but at the same time, two processors consume more power too. Core 2 Duo processors are also available for mobiles. Two processors are installed parallel to each other, one works at one time and if one heats up, it shifts it load to the other processor. Core 2 Duo processor uses full L2 cache of 2, 3, 4 or 6 MB available on the chip.

Differences and similarities

In terms of single processor, Core Duo processor is Pentium 1, and Core 2 Duo is Pentium 2. All Core 2 Duo processors are dual core, but not all dual processors are Core 2 Duo. Core duo and Core 2 duo are not different in terms of performance for a regular user of computer, however if you have to perform some 3D sort of activities, like games or images editing, Core 2 Duo is really impressive. Both are dual processors; processors on Core Duo work in series where as in Core 2 Duo they are installed parallel to each other. In Core 2 Duo, one processors works and after heating up, it shifts it load to the other one, on the other hand in Core Duo bother processors work simultaneously.

DiffBW Eye Catch

Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are both dual processors belonging to first and second generation of processors. Though, many advanced processors like Core i3 and Core i5 are now available in the market, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are still in use. When comparing both, Core 2 Duo is more efficient and has faster processing ability but Core duo is equally practical. For common use, Core Duo is useful, but to perform multi tasks simultaneously and for graphical utilization, Core 2 Duo is expert’s favorite.
