Difference Between German Rottweiler and American Rottweiler

Rottweilers are regarded as one of the strongest and one of the most powerful dog breeds in the world. Apart from being kept as pets, Rottweilers are kept as rescue dogs, police companions, drovers, guards, and sometimes even for herding cattle because of their strong muscles and bone strength. Rottweilers are classified into German and American rottweilers, both having very few differences between them. 

Rottweilers are descended from Germany and have an average lifespan of around 8 to 10 years. They are usually of black or mahogany colors. Earlier they were mainly used for herding livestock and pulling carts while now they’re being used for many purposes because of their strength.

The main difference between a German Rottweiler and an American Rottweiler is that the German Rottweiler is born in Germany while the American Rottweiler is born in America. They have slight differences in their body sizes, head shape, leg structure, tail docking.

What is a German Rottweiler?

A German Rottweiler is a dog species born in Germany and is bred according to the breeding standards set by the ADRK (Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Club). Earlier their tails were docked but now they are left with their natural tails. They are cool and calm by nature and make great pets and companions. They have good bite strength and have strong bones and muscles that are often used as guard dogs and search and rescue dogs.

The ADRK has strict guidelines and thus the dogs are of the best quality and are well built with hardly any deformity. They are well trained and are obedient and intelligent. They have broad heads and slightly smaller legs compared to the American Rottweilers.

German Rottweilers are more desirable than the American ones for security, search and rescue, and guarding purposes. They were earlier called butcher dogs. Their ancestors are believed to have been Roman cattle dogs.

What is American Rottweiler?

American Rottweilers are the dog breeds that are born in America with a characteristic docked tail. Tail docking is a method of snipping off the tails of these animals. The breeders do adhere to the AKC (American Kennel Club) breeding guidelines which are not as strict as the ADRK guidelines. If not bred well the dogs can come out to be aggressive, weak, and vague.

They are slightly smaller than the American Rottweilers and have slightly longer legs. They are less strong compared to the American ones. American Rottweilers are not as popular as the German ones in the markets but they are quite good to keep as pets and companions. 

The American Rottweiler batches are weaker, with lesser bone strength, and less massive than the dogs. There are no such distinctive characters present in American Rottweilers (except for the docked tail and slight difference in body structure) that make it different from the American ones. All Rottweilers have german bloodlines, the ones which were brought to America and bred according to the AKC were later recognized as the American Rottweilers.
