Difference Between Highway and Freeway

highwayHighway vs Freeway

Both the highway and freeways are major roads that connect cities or various regions. Both highways and freeways are public motorways that connect important cities or towns.

One of the differences that can be seen between highways and freeways, is that more traffic is seen on freeways. People who travel longer distances, prefer to use the freeway rather than the highway, as they are able to drive at a higher speed. Though there are speed regulations while travelling on the highways and the freeways, the freeways usually allow for a greater speed.

Another difference that can be seen, is that highways may pass through crowded places, whereas, freeways go through less crowded places. For this reason, freeways tend to be the better option for people who travel long distances.

While highways come with many intersections, freeways are free from such intersections. There could also be tollbooths at different points on a highway. On the other hand, freeways do not have any tollbooths.

In terms of the lanes, highways often have 2 or 4 lanes. On the contrary, freeways have more lanes, sometimes up to 6 lanes. While highways normally do not have dividers, or barriers between the two directions, freeways have barriers or dividers between the directions.

With regards to freeways, they have ramps for entering and exiting the road. There will be no traffic islands, traffic lights, stop signs and cross traffic on freeways. On the other hand, highways may have all of these.

Well, highways may be owned by the state, and freeways will be under the federal government’s control. The state governments undertake most of the repairs to the highways, and the repairs to the freeways are undertaken by the states, on a percentage basis.
