Milkshakes and smoothies are refreshing beverages found in a variety of shops and restaurants. They can also be easily made at home. Though many of us love to drink smoothies and milkshakes, some of us do not really know the difference between the two. The difference between milkshake and smoothie lies in the ingredients used and their nutritional value. The primary ingredient of milkshake is milk whereas the primary ingredient of smoothie is fruits. This is the main difference between milkshake and smoothie.
What is Milkshake
Milkshake is a cold drink made from milk. A flavoring such as fruit, chocolate and ice cream is then added to it and whisked until it’s frothy. The main ingredient of a milkshake is milk. The other ingredients are secondary. Sometimes the flavor of a milkshake is purely brought from a flavored ice cream. Whipped cream and candy toppings are sometimes used to top the drink. Milkshake is usually consumed as a dessert or a snack. Milkshakes are loaded with sugar and also contain a high amount of saturated fat and higher calories.
What is Smoothie
Smoothie is a thick, smooth drink of fresh fruit pureed with milk, yogurt, or ice cream. It is also similar to a milkshake. But the main difference lies in their primary ingredient or base. Smoothie has a fruit base, unlike milkshakes which have a milk base. So it naturally contains more fruit parts than milk. Sometimes grains and oatmeal are added to smoothies to thicken it. Other ingredients such as vegetables, greens, and healthy fats like flax seeds, coconuts, etc. can also be added to smoothies.
Smoothies can be used to replace a meal; they can be served as snacks or drunk with a main meal. Smoothies are generally considered to be healthier than milkshakes. Although smoothies are high in carbs, they are relatively low in fats. Since they are often made from real fruits, they are considered to be the healthy option of the two.
