Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, and the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton, jointly announced on 18th April 2017 that Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished and replaced with a new visa scheme known as Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. This change has been introduced to prevent abuse and mistreatment of immigrant workers as well as to safeguard the employment opportunities of Australian workers. The key difference between Temporary Work Visa 457 and Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa is that Temporary Skill Shortage will have a shorter skilled occupation list and tightened eligibility requirements than visa 457.

What is Temporary Work Visa 457?
Temporary Work Visa 457 is a visa that allows immigrant skilled workers to enter and live in Australia for up to 4 years. However, this worker has to be sponsored by an approved business. He or she also has to have the required skills and experience to fill a position nominated by an approved business, and the said position (occupation) should be on the list of eligible skilled occupations.
This visa allows immigrant skilled workers to live and work in Australia up to,
4 years– if the occupation is listed in the Medium and Long term Strategic Skilled List
2 years – if the occupation is not listed on the MLTSSL.
Under this visa, the visa holder’s family members can also work/study or live in Australia. There is also no limit to the number of times the visa holder can leave and enter the country with the duration of his work period.
What is Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa?
The Australian government has announced that Temporary Work Visa 457 will be abolished and will be replaced with a new temporary new skill shortage visa (TSS) in March 2018. This decision has been taken due to a variety of problems with the 457 visa including the abuse of immigrant workers.
The main reforms in TSS will basically focus on introducing the temporary skill shortage visa with new requirements, reinforcing eligibility requirements for employer-sponsored permanent skilled visas and condensing the occupation lists used for skilled migration visas.
The new visa program will contain two streams: short-term stream (up to two years) and medium-term stream up to four years.
